School Cooks in association with eatthechef.com School Cooks Student Registration

“I’m launching School Cooks because I want children to have a go at cooking. One of the great pleasures you can have is to start with a set of raw ingredients and end up with something you can eat with your family or friends. School Cooks is about getting them to think about eating well, living a healthy lifestyle and understanding the consequences of their decisions.”

School Cooks 2010/2011

School Cooks in association with eatthechef.com is a nationwide schools’ competition which equips students with the knowledge and skills to deal with a range of issues they face as they grow up – culminating in July 2011.

School Cooks will provide every school which takes part with a range of high quality, free lesson plans which have been specially devised to fit in with the Key Stage 3 Personal, Social, Health and Economics (PSHE) curriculum.

During the Autumn / Winter term students will be taught a wide range of practical skills. Through life-relevant topics the students will enjoy a bitesize chunk of nutritional health, learn how to create a video and will investigate, not just internet safety issues, but the responsibilities involved with using the web. The lessons will also look at safety in kitchens as well as exploring a variety of careers from kitchen porter to celebrity chef; TV runner to show producer.

Once students have completed these lessons they will be given the opportunity to put the ideas and skills they have developed to use and create a video of themselves cooking a dish – just like a TV chef. The videos will then be uploaded to www.schoolcooks.co.uk accessible only to students and teachers belonging to your school, who can vote for their favourite. The video with the most votes will be entered into a regional final.

The winning young chef from each of the six regions in the UK will then be entered into the national final to take place in July 2011 – winner to be chosen by Simon Rimmer.

“The best student for me will be the one that shows evidence that they have taken on board all the skills they have been taught throughout the course and produced something creative and well thought out.”
